Wakatakakage Goes Unbeaten Again, Twice Pushes Out Brother Wakamotoharu

November 3, 2026

Juryo Wakatakakage, who has missed two straight basho after emergency surgery in July for compartment syndrome in his left thigh, took part in morning practice at Arashio-beya in Sue, Fukuoka on November 3rd and went a perfect 6-0 in moshiai bouts against sekitori including Tanji, Daiseizan and Hadeyama. That included two wins over his older brother, Maegashira Wakamotoharu, one of them a straight-ahead push-out from the tachi-ai. It was his second straight unbeaten day after sweeping Daieisho and company at the Tokitsukaze ichimon session the day before.

Wakatakakage, who has fallen from sekiwake to juryo during his layoff, played it down: "It's not about winning or losing. I'm able to focus on doing my own sumo." He has not yet said whether he will compete in Kyushu, and stablemaster Arashio would only say they will watch how things go before deciding. Wakamotoharu, who won 10 in Aki for his first double-digit total in 11 basho, said his brother looked no different from before the injury: "He has recovered faster than I expected. His own hard work definitely has something to do with it."
