Hoshoryu Logs 62 Bouts in Two Days, Still Undecided on Kyushu
November 3, 2026
Yokozuna Hoshoryu, who has sat out three straight basho, took on visiting Maegashira Hiradoumi for 28 straight bouts at Tatenami-beya in Fukuoka on November 3rd and went 20-8. Hiradoumi pushed him back early on, but Hoshoryu took over as the session went on, winning the last six in a row while his opponent was left breathing hard. A day earlier he had gone to Sakaigawa-beya and taken on Hiradoumi 34 times, making 62 bouts over two days.
Hoshoryu said Chairman Hakkaku told him during the autumn tour to put in a high number of bouts. He wore a supporter on the right knee that was operated on in late July but said it is fine and his body is getting better day by day, trying out everything from kachiage and throat thrusts to front-belt grips, and even letting Hiradoumi attack first to work on fighting back. "It's not bad," he said. On whether he will compete in Kyushu: "I'm training with the intention of entering, but I haven't decided yet. I still need to talk to my stablemaster."
