Hoshoryu Takes 62 Bouts in Two Days, Stays Mum on Kyushu Entry
November 4, 2026
Yokozuna Hoshoryu went 20-8 in 28 straight practice bouts with Hiradoumi on November 3rd, after Hiradoumi visited his stable in Itoshima. A day earlier Hoshoryu had gone to Sakaigawa stable and taken 34 bouts with him, for 62 in two days. Hiradoumi pushed him back early, but Hoshoryu went on the attack more as the session went on, and while his opponent was breathing hard, the Yokozuna barely seemed winded.
"I tried different things, hitting and going chest first, to check how my body moves," Hoshoryu said, adding that his condition "isn't bad" and that his right knee, operated on at the end of July, is "fine." He has sat out three straight basho and is taking plenty of bouts on the advice of Rijicho Hakkaku. On whether he will compete in Kyushu, which opens November 8th, he said, "I'm training with the intention of competing, but I'll talk it over with my stablemaster first."
