Sumo Association releases Natsu basho
banzuke
April
24th - The Sumo Association released the Natsu basho banzuke Thursday a
few days early in order to capture sufficient headlines prior to the
extended Golden Week holiday in Japan. For the first time in 13 years,
three Yokozuna grace the ranks following the promotion of Kakuryu after
his first career yusho at the Haru basho. In Kakuryu's absence, the
Ozeki ranks are reduced to Kisenosato and Kotoshogiku making room for
Sekiwake Goeido who has solidified his Ozeki candidacy according to the
Japanese media. Goeido is joined by stalwart, Tochiohzan, to the West,
and then two rikishi make their sanyaku debut at Komusubi in the 32
year-old Yoshikaze and 21 year-old Chiyootori, the youngest rikishi in
the division pictured at right.
In the Maegashira ranks, M17 Sadanoumi makes his debut in the division
following in the footsteps of his father who also fought in Makuuchi
under the same name back in the early 1980's. Making their return to the
division are Kyokushuho, Sokokurai, Arawashi, and Chiyonokuni, a
Kokonoe-beya rikishi who brings the number of Makuuchi rikishi fighting
from that stable to four. The Natsu basho runs May 11 through May 25.
