I am pleased to see Wakanosato up at M1, but it strikes me as a bit amusing that Aminishiki, Kakuryu, and Aran are all bunched up in there too.  Aran was easier to watch last tournament, but between those three the henka percentage has a chance of being really appalling.

amin, kak and aran up there together... yes, that could be strange to watch, but it has perhaps the advantage to see the sanyaku more concentrated than usual... with two top-dogs gone you should also keep in mind that the jo-ii line dropped from the M3e to the M4e line... tamawashi will be there too, and we will have tosayutaka fighting the Koto's... oshu vs. tosayutaka could be interesting... okay... oshu aganist amin too, but thats another story

It's going to be a mess this time, for certain.  Bunch of new blood on top, old vets at the bottom, it will be interesting to see who ends up at the top of the leaderboard (beneath Hakuho).  And it wouldn't be a case of the cream floating to the top of the milk so much as the turds that float to the top of the bowl.

... And then there's the subtractive factor... At the top, with no Asa to beat up on Baruto, et al, there should definitely be some unusual numbers put up by the likes of Osh, Bar, the usual heavies. What makes this basho even more interesting is the mental shifting of gears by the likes of HF, Hak... Interesting to see where those 13-14 obligatory Asa wins go to.

M4 and below should be monkey business as usual.

Should be an enlightening time had by all.

As before, the banzuke in arrow form.

(basis is Hatsu banzuke, with arrows pointing to their new ranks.)

Huh.  Just noticed that Miyabiyama and Tochinoshin have been more or less going in tandem for the past 5 basho:

2008-032008-032008-032008-032008-032008-01
Tochinoshin(M1w) 5-10(M8w) 12-3(M1e) 4-11(M5w) 9-6(M13w) 9-6(M10w) 6-9
Miyabiyama(M2w) 5-10(M9w) 12-3(M1w) 4-11(M4e) 8-7(M11e) 9-6(M3e) 4-11

YMY and his weight are slowly sinking.... Gonna get passed by Gaga next basho. (And the purists cry, "Yet another 4-in-er in our midst.")

And the longest arrow belongs to: Toyohibiki.

(The start of his widely-expected run to Yokozuna.)

Ah, I was waiting for you!

I very much hope that he can KK from were he his (just outside the meatgrinder ranks) and get a fair shot at sanyaku ranks uninjured. I would love to see him clash with the Kotos.

He's already been there once and they all beat him (surprise). He just didn't have the skill it takes for the joi. I hope that changed, but I doubt it. At M5E, he's just within the reach of the long arm of the Kotos, but he won't get any other sharks. A kachikoshi isn't inconceivable - if it happens, send us a pic of your big grin, Cydrome (other than the one in your avatar).

As long as none of the joijin henkas, Hibiki has a chance for a helluva tournament.

And, considering the dignity of the joi banzuke position, nobody up there is gonna fight any way but straight up, right?

This is an intersting point. No one up there is beyond a good slide to the right on occasion, and nobody is henka-proof, especially (apparently) Hak.

This is a different landscape up there from the last time Asa went missing for a whole basho. I expect all kinds of interesting strategies.

So much for the ozrun.
